            Derevin’s younger sister had a pretty normal life before the war came to her planet. But when she was 19, her life took an extreme turn for the worse. After her parents and younger brother are killed in an Imperial take-over of her home planet, Balmorra, Sylvia stows away aboard a cargo ship bound for Nar Shaddaa. After the ship arrives, she sneaks off and manages to live off of whatever she can find on the streets, whether it’s vermin or garbage. She eventually joins up with a local gang for survival and protection. Things were finally starting to look up for her, until she and another of the gangs’ members (a rodian) get caught while robbing a casino (an idea she was against anyway). Then the casino owner, who is also a spice dealer / pimp / smuggler / etc., forces her to be a courtesan for him by threatening to kill her friend the rodian if she doesn’t cooperate. But because she wasn’t making much money for him doing that, and one of his smugglers got caught by Republic authorities, he decides to put her to the test as a smuggler. He gives her a ship (if you can even call it that. The thing could barely hold together), and the former smuggler’s droid to help her in her runs. She does this for a few years, repairing and upgrading her ship, and getting better at smuggling with each run, all the while developing a friendship with the quirky protocol droid. And then when she’s on a smuggling run, suddenly the rodian, who was a slave working for the spice dealer, gets killed by one of the owner’s shady customers. She hears about this upon her return, and at that moment decides it’s time to get out of the employment of this scumbag.
